Overtime Drama Defines Robertson Cup Finals; Tigers Face Must-Win Game 4

STONEY CREEK, ON — Three games. Three overtimes. The Robertson Cup Finals between the Stoney Creek Tigers and the Wentworth Gryphins has instantly become an Allan Cup Hockey classic. In a Best-of-5 championship series where the margin for error is razor-thin, the Gryphins have managed to take a 2-1 series lead, pushing the Tigers to the brink of elimination.
Every single game has required extra time to find a winner, showcasing just how evenly matched these two powerhouse teams truly are.
Game 1: The Comeback for the Ages Falls Just Short
The series opened at the Stoney Creek Arena with one of the wildest games in ACH history, ending in a 9-8 overtime victory for Wentworth.
The Gryphins seemingly had the game put away, building a massive 8-3 lead heading into the final frame. However, the Tigers refused to quit. In a legendary third-period performance, Stoney Creek fired 23 shots on net and scored five unanswered goals to tie the game. Cordell James, Dan Poliziani, Andrew Whalen, Darren McCormick, and Kyle Essery (with just 34 seconds left) all found the back of the net to force overtime.
Despite the heroic comeback and outshooting the Gryphins 55-40, Wentworth’s Alex Hutchings found the game-winner in the extra frame to steal Game 1.
Game 2: Cole Poliziani Plays Hero to Tie the Series
Facing an early series deficit, the Tigers hit the road for Game 2 and responded with a gritty, hard-fought 4-3 overtime victory to even the series at one game apiece.
Unlike the track meet of Game 1, Game 2 was a tight, defensive battle. Daniel Svedin was phenomenal in the Stoney Creek crease, turning aside 39 shots to keep his team in the fight. Mike Ruberto and Dylan Madge provided regulation offense, but it was Cole Poliziani who delivered the magic. After assisting on Cordell James' first-period goal, Poliziani took matters into his own hands in overtime, scoring unassisted to secure the crucial road win.
Game 3: Heartbreak at the Creek
Returning home for a pivotal Game 3, the Tigers and Gryphins traded blows in another incredibly close matchup.
Cole Poliziani stayed red-hot, scoring two goals and adding an assist, while Kyle Essery and Cordell James also lit the lamp. Trailing late in the third period, Josh Pietrantonio scored a clutch goal with just over four minutes remaining to tie the game at 5-5 and send the Stoney Creek crowd into a frenzy, forcing the third consecutive overtime of the series.
Unfortunately, the Gryphins found the lucky bounce in sudden death, with Reid Yochim scoring the game-winner to give Wentworth a 6-5 victory and a 2-1 series lead.
Do or Die on Thursday
The Stoney Creek Tigers now face their biggest test of the season. Trailing 2-1 in the Best-of-5 series, the Tigers will head to the Harry Howell Arena on Thursday night for a must-win Game 4. A victory will bring the series back to Stoney Creek for a winner-take-all Game 5 on Saturday, while a loss will end the season.
Puck drop for Game 4 is set for 7:30 PM at Harry Howell Arena. Tigers fans, make the trip and get loud—the boys need you now more than ever!
