Tigers Hold Off Gryphins in 9-6 Thriller on Hockey Fights Cancer Night

Stoney Creek Tigers Hockey Fights Cancer

STONEY CREEK, ON — It was a night defined by purple jerseys and a relentless offensive attack at the arena last Saturday. On an evening dedicated to Hockey Fights Cancer, the Stoney Creek Tigers erupted for a season-high nine goals to hand the visiting Wentworth Gryphins a 9-6 loss.

The victory moves the Tigers to an impressive 5-1 record on the season, while the Gryphins drop to 5-2.

The Tigers wasted little time getting the crowd into the game. Cordell James opened the scoring near the midway mark of the first period, converting a setup from Mike Ruberto. Although Wentworth’s Kyle Lewis responded quickly to knot the score at 1-1, Stoney Creek seized control shortly after. Goals from Jordan Gignac and Dylan Madge, followed by a power-play marker from Josh Pietrantonio, capped off a four-goal opening frame, sending the Tigers into the intermission with a 4-1 lead.

That momentum carried directly into the second period, where the Tigers' offense shifted into overdrive. Daniel Vella and Pietrantonio, notching his second of the night, struck early to widen the gap. Mitchell Reid then buried what would ultimately stand as the game-winning goal, followed rapidly by tallies from Kyle Essery and Matt Ruberto.

By the time the second intermission arrived, Stoney Creek had built a commanding 9-2 lead.

However, the Gryphins refused to go quietly. Wentworth pushed back hard in the third period, outshooting the Tigers 17-7 in the final frame. The visitors rattled off four unanswered goals to make things interesting down the stretch, but the hole proved too deep to dig out of.

Tigers goaltender Matt Sagrott was busy all night, facing a heavy workload of 43 shots. He stood tall when it mattered, turning aside 37 attempts to preserve the victory and secure the two points for Stoney Creek.
